But in Kenya, it is the month of August that has been known to come with a catalogue of tragedies.

And nothing attests to this fact more than the fire outbreak at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport yesterday that, coincidentally, came on the anniversary of the August 7 terrorist attack in 1998. Here are some tragedies that have befallen the country in August in the past:

August 22, 1978: Kenya¡Çs first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta passes away in Mombasa plunging the country into mourning.

August 1, 1982: Elements of the Kenya Air Force attempt to overthrow the Government of President Moi. The coup is crushed but leaves over 200 dead and property worth billions destroyed.

August 14, 1992: Masinde Muliro, a former assistant minister and activist in the fight for a multi-party system collapses and dies at the airport shortly after arriving back from abroad.

August 14, 1990: Bishop Alexander Muge, a critic of the Moi Government and Anglican Bishop of Eldoret, is killed in a road accident.

August 7, 1998: An explosion rips through the US Embassy in Nairobi killing 212 and injuring 5,000 people. The attack is linked to the Al Qaeda terror network.

August 23, 2003: Vice-President Kijana Wamalwa dies after illness at the Royal Free Hospital in England, just two months after wedding Yvonne Nambia.

August 22, 2012: Martin Shikuku, former MP for Butere popularly known as the ¡Èthe people¡Çs watchman¡É passes on after a battle with cancer.

August 22, 2012: Inter-ethnic fighting between the Orma and Pokomo tribes residing in Tana River District results in the deaths of at least 52 people.

Airlines, exporters, hoteliers and tour operators had a busy day yesterday recollecting their lives after the Wednesday early morning inferno that razed the airport¡Çs international arrival terminal.

Kenya Airways, which was operating at just 35 per cent of its capacity yesterday, is among the major casualties. Other than grinding to a halt Wednesday and having to make alternatives for its stranded customers, the airline¡Çs stock at Nairobi Securities Exchange is expected to take a beating. Thursday, the share fell to Sh9.45 from Sh9.50 on Wednesday.

Kenya Airports Authority, on Wednesday alone, lost more than Sh22 million, in landing and parking fees that airlines pay for the use of JKIA.

Though the losses are massive, investment analysts say it is still early to attach a figure on the magnitude of the damage.

¡ÈIt might not be easy to quantify losses at the moment because to do any calculation we need to know the time when the situation will be rectified,¡É said John Kirimi, executive director Sterling Capital. ¡ÈWe still do not know yet the extent of the damage and in this calculation, time is of essence.¡É

According to analysts, KQ stock, which has already lost two per cent of its value in the last two weeks, is expected to further trade within the range of Sh9.40 and Sh9.50 from a high of Sh9.65 in late July.

¡ÈThis is due to the closing down of the airport. Unless it is re-opened fast, it will be a big blow to the economy and KQ,¡É said Hazel Kuria, a research analyst at Genghis Capital.

Big announcement

Jane Ngige, Kenya Flower Council CEO said some cut flower exporters might incur losses due to cancellation of flights. On Wednesday, the Government had said cargo flights would resume the same day but according to Ngige, this did not happen. She said the industry expected flights to resume later yesterday.

However, a statement from the Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said cargo flights had resumed and ¡Èare operating on a specific schedule between 10pm and 6am¡É.

International flights landed at Kenya's main airport Thursday morning, the first since a fire a day earlier gutted the arrivals terminal causing widespread chaos and delays, airport officials said.

The fire forced the cancellation or diversion of scores of flights at east Africa's biggest transport hub.

Using the domestic terminal for passengers instead of the fire-damaged international hall, flights from London and Bangkok safely landed early Thursday morning, said Eric Kiraithe, head of security at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

"We have received two flights from London and Bangkok, and currently we are checking in passengers flying to other destinations including Zanzibar, Johannesburg and Paris," Mr Kiraithe told AFP.

Some of those passengers will fly first to Kenya's second city Mombasa before taking connecting international flights, but others are expected to leave directly for their destination from Nairobi, he added.

"We are confident we will process other flights in the course of the day, although we are not fully operational," Mr Kiraithe said.

Cargo and domestic flights out of the Kenyan capital had already resumed on Wednesday evening.

However, it was not clear when airlines other than the national carrier Kenya Airways would also land at Nairobi.

The fierce fire, which started before dawn on Wednesday, took around four hours to bring under control, with firefighters hampered by a lack of both water and equipment.

The interior ministry was forced to issue public appeals for Nairobi's notoriously congested traffic to give way to trucks ferrying water to the airport after firefighters tackling the blaze ran "dangerously low on water".

Some 16,000 passengers usually transit through JKIA every day, according to official figures.

The airport is a regional hub for east Africa, with many long-distance international flights landing there to connect to countries across the region.

There were no casualties in the fire but two people -- an airport worker and a passenger -- were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

August is one of Kenya's busiest months for tourism, a key industry for the country, as foreign travellers fly in to see its wildlife and enjoy the white sand beaches on its Indian Ocean coast.

The airport offers direct connections to Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and other African cities

NAIROBI, KENYA: International flights are expected to resume on Thursday at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ( JKIA) after Wednesday¡Çs inferno that destroyed the entire arrivals terminal.

A statement released by Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni indicated that nine flights will take off on Thursday.

The domestic departure unit will be used for international departures until further notice.

¡ÈDomestic Unit 3 will be used for international departure through gate 3 until further notice,¡É Kenya Airways Corporate Communications Manager Kepha Bosire told The Standard Digital.

The first international flight to take off from JKIA is KQ762 heading to Johannesburg.

The Other flights are PW 750 which will depart for Mwanza at 11am, PW710 (Dar-Es-Salaam via Zanzibar), KQ412 (Entebbe), KQ482 (Dar-Es-Salaam), KQ202 (Bombay), KQ310 (Dubai), KQ112 (Paris-Charles De Gaulle) and KQ102 heading to Heathrow in London.

Naikuni however said other flights remain suspended until further notice.

Meanwhile, local flights continued to take off from the cargo terminal.

The flights departed to Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu international airports.

Seven flights are expected to depart for Mombasa while 10 flights will fly into JKIA from Mombasa.

Three flights will take off to Kisumu and two to Eldoret.

Only passengers with confirmed tickets will be accommodated in the domestic flights as Kenya Airways stated it did not have ticketing service.

The JKIA lock down comes only a day after a fuel crisis forced cancellation of several flights to and from the facility. Worst hit are exporters of fresh produce including flowers, fruits and vegetables as well as fish.
¡ÈWe are still counting the loss that the closure has caused,¡É said Jane Ngige, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Flower Council.
Cargo companies were busy yesterday looking for alternative routes to ferry the fresh produce usually flown out of JKIA.

The cost of storing cargo in the cold storage facilities is about $40,000 per day (Sh3.48 million), according to conservative figures from Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA).
¡ÈWe are incurring huge losses as a result of not being allowed to access certain sections of the cargo area, meaning whatever is in the cold rooms will continue to suffer storage charges. There is also a general slowdown in movement of cargo already at the airport, with no word yet on the fate of all inbound and outbound cargo,¡É said William Ojonyo, Chief Executive, Keynote Logistics Limited.
Figures indicate that some 300 tonnes of fresh flowersare exported through JKIA per day with one tonne worth close to Sh300,000.
This works out to Sh90 million worth of flowersexported daily.

Sensitive facility
¡ÈWe are still collecting data from our members on state of the cargo, including if any of it was destroyed during the inferno,¡É said Ngige.
Questions are being raised on the state of disaster preparedness at the airport and whether the firecould have been averted.

Full operations at Kenya's main airport will resume at midnight, the government has announced.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said Thursday that the State pavilion that is reserved for visiting Heads of State has been opened to normal travellers.

"The President has put the State pavilion at our disposal to serve as the main arrivals unit for all passengers," said Mr Kamau during a news conference at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi.

He said the security of passengers was guaranteed.

Late Wednesday, President Barack Obama offered US support following the fire at JKIA.

In a telephone call to President Kenyatta, the US leader restated his country's unwavering support to Kenya.

Regional leaders also offered their support.

Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi and Ethiopia¡Çs Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn telephoned President Kenyatta to offer support, including the use of airports in their own countries while Kenya worked to normalise operations at JKIA.

President Kenyatta also received a call from the President of the African Development Bank Donald Kaberuka, as well as senior executives from the World Bank, who had immediate offers of financing the rehabilitation of the airport.

¡ÈWe are encouraged by the support of the US President, my brothers the regional leaders, as well as major financial institutions who all want to see the regional air hub back on its feet quickly,¡É President Kenyatta said.

¡ÈWe are determined that normal operations resume at the airport quickly, and are glad to see that a partial reopening has already taken place, with successful domestic flight operations."

On Wednesday, the fire that started at dawn destroyed huge sections of the international arrivals terminal, including the area connecting to Units One and Two, as well as shops, banks, forex bureaux, travel agencies and airline offices.

Nairobi, Kenya: Domestic and cargo flights have been cleared for takeoff at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after Wednesday morning fire.

International flights have not yet been cleared. However, the airporta€™s Unit 3 will be used for international arrivals and departures.

Earlier, a statement from the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU) had indicated that domestic flights will resume at 3pm.

PSCU stated that a time-frame for the resumption of international flights will be relayed later.

a€œThe Kenya Civil Aviation has granted clearance for the use of Unit 3 for international departures and arrivals,a€ the statement read in part.

The cargo and domestic flights will operate from the Cargo terminal.

President Uhuru Kenyatta toured the airport Wednesday morning to assess the damage.

A a€œTo the thousands of passengers, including tourists, whose journeys were disrupted, the President shares your concerns and regrets the inconvenience,a€ read a statement from State House.

The fire broke out at JKIAa€™s arrival terminal at around 5am causing the airport to be closed.

All departures were cancelled while flights were diverted to other airports.

Kenya Airways has released a revised Thursday schedule for domestic flights following Wednesday's fire at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, Kenya Airways Chief Executive Titus Naikuni announced that flights for Thursday to and from Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Eldoret international airports will operate from the Cargo terminal to cover for the facilities destroyed in the morning inferno.
Although the national carrier said temporary measures have been put in place to ensure the flights resume, only passengers with confirmed tickets will be allowed to fly on Thursday because ¡Èwe do not have a ticketing service for tomorrow¡Çs (Thursday's) flights.¡É

On Wednesday, more than 16,000 passengers were stranded after the fire caused a total shutdown of the airport. The government later reopened domestic flights mainly to the coastal city of Mombasa. It is understood the resumption of domestic flights could help bring in passengers of flights initially diverted to other airports in the country as emergency operators handled the crisis at JKIA.
In the new schedule, Kenya Airways announced there will be seven more flights to Mombasa from Nairobi. A further ten flights will depart the Moi International Airport in Mombasa for the JKIA on the same day. KQ will also schedule seven other flights between Nairobi and Kisumu and between Nairobi and Eldoret.
On Wednesday evening, Kenya Airports Authority officials were putting up a makeshift clearance desk at the domestic arrivals and departure sections to help handle the rescheduled flights on Thursday. KQ said there would be a number of international flights but only those with confirmed tickets would be allowed to board.
However, the morning flight KQ 760 to Johannesburg will be delayed for departure at 8.30am (East Africa Time). Flight KQ 419 from Entebbe to Nairobi will depart Entebbe International Airport in Uganda at 8 am local time.

Airlines were on Wednesday appeasing thousands of passengers whose travel plans were disrupted in the wake of the fire at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Airlines will dig into their cash boxes to provide alternative transport or compensation to passengers.
¡ÈThere will be huge costs. Airlines cannot abandon their passengers and they will provide alternative transport and accommodation,¡É said Kenya Association of Air Operators chief executive E.K. Waithaka on Wednesday.

Kenya Airways diverted 1,080 passengers to Mombasa on Wednesday morning while 200 were taken from Mombasa to Nairobi by road. Emirates said it would provide free re-bookings.
The financial repercussions of the fire will extend to tourism and horticulture.
August is a peak month for international arrivals.
On the insurance front, APA Insurance, which provides cover for the Kenya Airports Authority, said it had sent a team to the airport. ¡ÈWe have sent loss adjustors to the site,¡É said APA chief operating officer Suresh Kumar in a statement.

¡ÈJomo Kenyatta Airport has been a major problem for Kenya Airways and the aviation industry here,¡É said Standard Investment Bank analyst Eric Musau.
British Airways commercial manager for East and Central Africa, Mr George Mawadri, said: ¡ÈThere will be a huge ripple effect in the region because Nairobi is a link to many other cities on the continent.¡É
Domestic flights resumed in the afternoon and the airport cleared airlines to receive international arrivals through the domestic terminal from this morning.

Investigators were on Wednesday examining the possibility of sabotage as they combed through the debris of a fire which destroyed the international arrivals terminal at Kenya¡Çs largest airport.

They were exploring the possibility of arsonists seeking to destroy immigration records or other sensitive security data at Nairobi¡Çs Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

One theory was that it took too long for anyone to respond to what had initially started as a small fire which witnesses said could have been contained had the response been quicker.

All this came as top security officials, including Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, National Intelligence Service chief Michael Gichangi, CID boss Ndegwa Muhoro and officers from the anti-terrorism unit held a series of meetings at JKIA the whole day.

President Uhuru Kenyatta earlier led a high-level team of government officials to JKIA.

The fire caused massive air traffic disruptions as the busiest airport in the region was shut down. More than 16,000 travellers were affected.

Planes were diverted to Mombasa and Eldoret in Kenya and Kilimanjaro and Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.

On Wednesday evening, authorities said 120 witnesses from KAA, immigration and others had been interviewed and recorded statements.

Plans were being made for international planes to Kenya to first land at Moi International Airport in Mombasa for clearance and then the passengers to fly to Nairobi on domestic flights.

The fire that started at dawn destroyed huge sections of the international arrivals terminal, including the area connecting to Units One and Two, as well as shops, banks, forex bureaux, travel agencies and airline offices.

Teams of forensic investigators, intelligence officers and explosive experts were at the scene to establish the cause of fire.

Passengers who were caught up in the early morning incident were hurriedly evacuated, and some watched helplessly as their luggage was destroyed in the blaze.

President Kenyatta was showed around the ruins and later issued a statement through his spokesman Manoah Esipisu.

¡ÈThe cause of fire is being investigated and at this point there¡Çs no reason to speculate. There was no loss of life. There was serious disruption of aviation operations at this airport. Contingency measures have been put in place to stabilise the situation and return airport to normal operations,¡É the President said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said a team comprising police detectives and intelligence officers had been formed to carry out the investigations.

Kenya Power technicians were also called in to help in the investigations.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Ndegwa Muhoro said forensic and explosive experts would be part of the investigations.
¡ÈWe are not leaving anything to chance,¡É he said.

The fire started at one of the Immigration booths, at around 4.30am, and spread through the baggage area, and the enclosed bridges connecting Units One and Two.
